This is a really large state park, it's about six miles past the entrance back to the camp sites. Great looking Cabins, and nice looking Golf Course. Hiking trails, BMX bike course, horse trails, fishing area and paddle boats and canoes for rent. Defiantly worth a day or several.

This park is huge and has so much to offer. Some trails will "kick your butt" but your hard work will pay off with outstanding views. Trail around the lake are easier and very enjoyable. The fishing area and pavilions are very well done. Don't miss the Tree Top Nature Trail and the rescued birds. The Rehabilitation Center is doing great work here. We camped here for 5 nights. The volunteers were friendly and helpful and the grounds were fairly well kept, but the site we got was TIGHT to get into. Not all are this way but be aware if you have a larger RV. The bathrooms were clean but showing their age. One laundry room closed and the other...well, let's just say we didn't use it. Still we would stay here again b/c of the park's quiet beauty.

Oak mountain is great for learing about animals, swimming, scenic drives and views, and hiking! I hiked to pea vine falls with my pup and it was great!

Oak Mountain State Park is one of Alabama's best. It is only minutes from downtown Birmingham; but, it has everything you need -- and more. There's paddle boat rental, fishing boat rental, cabins, camping, hiking, a beach for swimming, and ample wildlife for your enjoyment. There are no gas motors allowed on the large lake so be sure to bring your electric trolling motor and battery unless you like to use the oars.If you're an avid outdoorsman or just want away from the city, a day at Oak Mountain State Park is worth your time.

Rent a canoe or paddle boat. Hike to peavine falls and play in the pool under the waterfall. Swim or tan on the "beach". Picnic, golf, bike, fish. A great unspoiled place to enjoy nature and the mountains.

Love to come to Oak Mountain for the hiking. Love how convenient it is to Birmingham (motels and restaurants) but still how you leave it all behind when you enter the park. Great well marked trails. A bargain for $2 for 2 seniors.

I hike the trails of Oak Mountain on a regular basis. All are pretty tough if you are moving on, but all could be good, leisurely trips for the most part. The trails are never crowded . They are peaceful and secluded for ultimate privacy. Oak Mountain is also a premier bike trail location. I've watched several events during my hikes and I'm amazed at the skill levels of the athletes. For a real challenge hike the Blue Trail and crossover orange and follow white up to Shackleford Point, the highest point in the park. I pass people all the time in sandals and flip flops, but they are not at all acceptable for these trails. I recommend hiking boots or at least great tennis shoes.

Lots of lovely trails, kayaking, horseback riding. There is a wildlife rehabilitation center which tends to injured and abandoned birds and this was good to visit. Most of the time we were the only family on the trails. Very nice.

Overall I recommend Oak Mountain. The facilities are very good for a state park and the location is very good. This trip we decided to hike the Blue Trail and camp out for two nights. The trails are very well marked and I wouldn't hesitate to hike them weekley for exercise if I lived in the Pelham/Hoover area. The campground features heated restrooms and was enjoyable overall. Our only issue was on night two when a group showed up at 10:45pm and started chopping wood. Afterwards they preceded to wake me up at 2, 3, and 4 am with short bursts of yelling and drunken singing.

We visited Oak Mountain on a weekday and had a great time. It wasn't crowded at all. We did some hiking and visited the birds in rehab. The place was beautiful and everyone who worked there was very helpful.

Nice place to go for a picnic or biking of walking. The beach area however is over run with people. Most of them the day we went were drinking and needed to have been ask to leave. Overall, there's a lot of fun things to do other than swim!

Unrivaled views, great hiking trails, horses, petting zoo, great campground, lake activities and boat rentals, Raptor/Bird rehabilitation center, the park has it all. You could spend a week camping or just a long day visiting by picking your attractions in the park. AMAZING!

My title summed it up pretty well. We are full-time RVers and this was our 23rd state this year, so we've camped at a lot of parks. Oak Mountain is large and offers great amenities and would be a great place to spend several weeks, if it weren't for the showers. They are outdated, oddly configured, moldy and dirty. On the bright side they were heated and had hot water. But if this is the flagship Alabama park, I am in no hurry to visit others.

Rv camping. Campsites close together. Bath house only one shower. Firepits. Very well maintained. November leaves very beautiful. Lots of bike riders. Golf course. Farm animal area. Large lake to fish. This is a pretty park but seeing it once was enough for us.

We went tent camping. There was a nice wall at each site as well as a fire pit with a grill. The only thing we did not like was the gravel area the tent rested on. The bathhouses were basic but had the essentials. The staff was extremely friendly. We are already ready to go back!
