My hubby and I spend a fun (but cold) day here exploring the park. They were doing controlled burns and so some of the backcountry areas were not available. But we could still got to see the highlights. The dog loved it too!

First, I have submitted a correction because I had a hard time finding this listing since it should be "DeSoto" (one word). Anyway, our family make a brief visit to the park in January while passing through Fort Payne. It was breathtaking! The nearby DeSoto Falls were amazing. The store and bathrooms at the park were very clean and appealing. The picnic area was beautiful. It was a gorgeous place, and I can't wait to visit again with more time to explore!

We spent a day hiking in De Soto State Park on a rare mild day in January and found it to be a great place. We hiked several of trails and found them very well marked and easy to follow. One of our trails took us through the improved campground and we discovered level, gravel sites that would work for either a tent or an RV. The highlight of our trip was the white tail deer sightings while out on the trails.

I got some really good waterfall pics. Several good locations to put a tripod so you can slow down that shutter speed to get the right look. The lake has some beautiful across the lake shots with the mountain Laurel when in bloom. I went in May 2014 and between the Mountain Laurel and the dogwood blooms it was stunning.

Enjoy the beauty of the park. Staff was friendly and helpful. However dining/lodge needs help. Breakfast was very good, however diner was lacking in main course only good thing was salad bar and bake potatoes. Catfish nuggets not warm and just fried skin with little meat. Better quality control is needed.

Rv camping. Sites are not too close together. Wooded. Firepits. Very clean, nice bath house. End of october fall leaves spectacular! Waterfalls and trails are lovely. Range from very easy to difficult. Desoto falls makes a beautiful photo. Ate in the park...the catfish is wonderful. The ruebin and sweet tater fries very good. My son had burger and fries. He left nothing on the plate. Nice view, decor, atmosphere and food makes it a must do for lunch or dinner. Toured one of the cabins. Will go back and stay in one next visit. Very cozy. Nearby mentone is a little artsy town. Fort Payne has an interesting train museum and shops. Music group Alabama museum. Sallie Howard church s very unique. Go to little river park as well. Great waterfall and information center. Worth the short drive. This park is perfect for those who love nature in the raw with city comforts nearby. I did not want to leave desoto state park!

The folks at registration were super nice and very helpful. We stayed in the dog-friendly chalet and the dog-friendly cabin. No pet odors at all! They were both very nice. Chalet has ample kitchen whereas the cabin's is small. Nice TVs in both. Both were very quiet and we slept soundly. Mattresses in chalet were more comfortable. Both were very clean. The cabin is farther away from neighbors than the chalet. The cabin has a bathroom in the bedroom so if you are sleeping in the living room you have to enter the bedroom to use it. The chalet's bathroom is downstairs so if needed and you are sleeping upstairs, well be careful coming down the stairs in the middle of the night. There are fire pits at each as well as nice screened porches. We drove into Fort Payne to get groceries. Foodland was a super grocery store, prices were great and they had many brands to choose from. Also had fresh shrimp already peeled. Wine and beer section, too. Friendly workers. So, try the cabin. It was really nice. I plan on returning! Oh, if you are 62 and over, or a state employee, you get a 15% discount on your stay. The park is wonderful, sooooo pretty. You an mini-hike out the back door or take in the beautiful boardwalk that takes you through the forest and over a nice stream. Lovely.

The Park is a great place to view the fall foilage. The Desoto Falls was a beautiful landmark to visit. We also visited the Sallie Howard Memorial Chapel church that has a Giant rock that is built into the church behind the pulpit. Don't miss it!

Drove thru to see DeSoto falls only this trip. We had seen them a few years ago in a dry season from a high overlook. Take the time to drive to the actual fals. Water was free flowing and very pretty. We hit it right with great fall colors to surround it , for great photos . We didn't take tie to hike, the drive in was very scenic .

Went here while staying in Mentone, mainly to experience the multiple and extensive hiking trails and were not disappointed. The entire state park is honeycombed with well marked and well maintained hiking trails and we enjoyed our day here very much. No hesitation in recommending the park to anyone who has an interst in hiking and the outdoors................

We came up from staying near Cloudland Canyon. We started with the walking hike that starts behind the visitor center (where we also picked up a geocache) and had our first "Lost in the Woods" situation. It was the classic "we thought you were behind us". Daughter and I turned right at the trail intersection; husband turned left. It took about 45 minutes for us to reconnect. Those waterfalls were dry. We then drove down to the big waterfalls for a perfect waterside picnic and stroll. It was a beautiful stop.Visited October 2013

Nice trials, I did about 4 hours of hiking On the scout trail, the recommended one, the trial in total would take a whole day easy, trial is not that well marked and isn't for inexperienced, plenty of places to swim on way too
