How often have you seen a species that was virtually extinct, and is making a comeback? Our recent visit to Vermillion Cliffs allowed us to see 8 of these huge birds flying above the cliffs. It is a beautiful setting and an amazing sight.

What we saw from our drive along 89A was spectacular. I did not realize how big this place is until we stopped at the overlook that showed the map. It sounds like the best way to see this area is a tour deep into the park if you have a day or more to spend. Otherwise just enjoy the views along 89A.

Even if you just drive along 89 or 89A the sight and view along this unforgettable stretch of highway on a wide open plateau are stunning. Be sure to stop at Lee's Ferry and Cliff Dwellers. If you have more time, explore along the dirt roads or hike into the rugged area. If you do be sure to carry enough water. This is a simply spectacular area.

Vermillon Cliffs is big area located in both Arizona and Utah. You can enjoy a view, but real beauty is to explore it deeper. Be prepared to drive by unpaved bumpy roads for quite a while.

We spent about 3 hrs at the Condor Viewing area of Vermillion Cliffs. I had a high power spotting scope and a very large telephoto lens. We watched a adolecant condor and two adults for about an hour. It was incredible to be able to watch this bird which is on the verge of extinction. There are only about 400 of them in the world. This is a very hard place to find. But well worth the effort. You need high power binoculars or a spotting scope to enjoy this one. They are a must.

Get up close by taking a dirt road which is on the left about 15 miles East of Jacob Lake. There is a viewing point below the cliffs where the Californian Condor project is based. We saw two birds sitting high on the cliff tops, but you may be lucky and see this rare bird in flight on its 9ft wing span.

Thank you God for giving us such a splendid earth. What a fabulous asset our country has in this area. Consider a 4 x 4 to be able to see more.

The Vemillion Cliffs are shown with Boulder, UT, but that is the wrong location. They are located between Jacob Lake (on the north rim of the Grand Canyon) and Page, AZ. This is quite a bit south of Boulder.

The drive from Jacob Lake towards Page, Az., on 89A is stunning. First, there is the Kaibab Forest, then breath taking view of Vermillion Cliffs and a large part of the valley from an overview. The drive follows the Vermillion Cliffs for miles past Marble Canyon , Lee's Ferry and Glenn Canyon. Just amazingly beautiful. Condors were released in the area of the Vermillion Cliffs. Usually there sometime in the fall and winter. Migrate north for the summer. Be sure to look back and to the right as you approach 89.Historic restaurant and lodging places along the way.

If you're going to Page AZ from the west Rte 89A is a beautiful way to get there.

There is much to see on Boulder Mountain. The drive from Torrey to Boulder on Highway 24 has some of the best scenery you will find anywhere.
