We came here to see the final resting place of Stonewall Jackson's arm. Unfortunately, the house is closed in January, so we couldn't go inside. A helpful volunteer was working and he took the time to talk to us about the house, trees, cemetery, land, etc. In the off season when the house is close, you must first get a parking pass from the Chancellorsville Battlefield National Park. It is a long walk down the gravel path (my 80+ year old parents were able to walk it) but it is worth the walk.

If you are a Stonewall Jackson fan you must stop here! This is the site where Stonewall Jackson's arm is! The house itself is somewhat in sad shape because there is no money going in to help it out. The volunteer in the house was very friendly and answered all our questions! It was somewhat clear that he was bored because no one really goes into the house; however, he even gave us a small tour of the house and again was just very nice. It is a stop that I would recommend!

Ellwood is the real thing as plantations in Virginia go. William Jones and his brother were old Virginia residents who settled this part of the Commonwealth as the fronteer moved West. Mr. Jones grew the farm to approximately 5,000. The real attention grabbing event is, of course, the battle of the Wilderness in 1864. The Union used the house as a headquarters for various generals, and as an hospital when the battle was over. The volunteer guides in partnership with the National Park Service provide a free and helpful interpretation of the property. The location that is off the main highways has a peaceful setting that feels more like 1864 than 2014. It is a delightful setting in the piedmont of Virginia that is worth the time and effort to learn more about our history.

Yes, Jackson's arm is buried here. The restoration of this old house is an ongoing work. Located right in the middle of Wilderness Battlefield, which is still rural, the home was occupied until the last 40-odd years, and is being restored.

Ellwood is a wonderful hidden historic site. Ellwood is a work in progress but worth the trip to go. It's close to battlefield sites , old home sites, and close to other historical homes as well. They have an old herb garden and even a grave for Jackson's arm that they amputated and buried there. A good place for Civil War information and artifacts. You ccan even take pictures of the inside of the house. Donations are welcome.
