Lived in the area for a few years and enjoyed Mt Erie several times. Best view for 4th of July fireworks, brought a blanket and sat on the rocks.
Another curvy winding road worth the trip up and down. Just take it slow...it's not a race to the top/bottom. :)
Mt. Erie Park is in the Heart Lake section of Anacortes Community Forest Lands. The paved road to the top of Mount Erie is only the beginning. There are also trails to the top. At the base of the mountain, there is a parking area and an informative kiosk, and the start of some trails. There are no restroom facilities however. Short trails, with some steps, lead to two fine viewpoints on the way to the top. The two viewpoints share limited parking.Neither is wheelchair accessible. Several trails take off from the road, with some shoulder parking available. These viewpoints, like the others on Mount Erie, do have identifiers. On one side of the road, you will see several of the San Juan Islands, and some of Anacortes. On the other side of the road, you will have vistas of lakes and more.At the top, there are a couple of small parking areas. There is also a restroom. Our favorite viewpoint is wheelchair and stroller accessible. You have spectacular views of Campbell Lake with its island, some of the islands to the east, a view of the Cascades, and sometimes, hang-lgiderers and rock-climbers. Another viewpoint, looking toward the Cascades, the Skagit Valley, the refinery, Mount Vernon, and nearby Whistle Lake has steps leading down to the viewpoint from the parking area. Whistle Lake has its own trails, by the way.On the way to the Mount Erie base parking area (or past it if you are coming from Anacortes,, do keep a lookout for trailheads off of Heart Lake Road. At the base of the mountain there is access to other trails in the Anacortes Community Forest Land. At and near Heart Lake there are more trailheads. Nearer Anacortes there are several other trailheads. Maps of the trails are available in Anacortes at the visitor center, and possibly at the Mount Erie Store.Whether you want to spend an hour or two, or all day hiking, you are bound to find a trail you like. Some trails are nearly level, others are downright steep. Several lead to lakes and ponds. Some of the trails also allow bicycle riders.
One can drive or hike to the top of Mt Erie. The views are outstanding and well worth the effort. There are also trails that will take you to Whistle Lake or to the top of Sugarloaf.
Viewing platforms with dazzling views of surrounding Skagit County and Whidbey Island. Please read the Memorial plaque in the parking area at the top.Young man went off trail and tried to look over the edge. I was there that day and it reminds us all to cherish those we love.Enjoy and be Safe
Awesome drive to the top of the mountain just a few minutes from town center. Lots of himing inthe area. Terrific view of ocean, mkuntian ranges and many other sights. The day was cloudy and overcast so we weren't able to see all that we hoped.
Great for a day play! All ages young and old bring a lunch great picnic spot with views. Bring some binoculars tons of wildlife oppurtunities
You can go up by car to the very top and enjoy the super-impressive views over the islands. Don't miss to watch the birds flying around there and enjoy the pure nature.
We drove up to the peak of Mt. Erie during a recent business trip. Surprisingly, not the official vista but the unbeaten path gives the best views. About 100 yards down from the peak, you get to an area that has stunning views. Yes, you have to climb over some boulders and climb down to a plateau but it is absolutely worth it!
A tight road up there, windy but worth it. Plenty of places to pull over & look. Well worth the trip
We were short on time so didn't end up hiking, just drove our car all the way to the top. Climbed out on some rocks and saw absolutely breathtaking views! Even if you don't have a full day to spend hiking around or rock climbing, I recommend at least taking the short drive up to the top! You won't regret adding this little detour on to your trip!
Just happened to read another review on things to see in Ancacortes and this was on top of the list. Just minutes from downtown, this is a view you don't want to miss! You can drive to the top and see a couple of different vantage points to see the San Juan Islands. Amazing!
This is a drive able look out. First off, it is very close to the town of Anacortes. Also, it is all paved. Coming from Idaho, I was very surprised that this road was paved all the way to the top of the mountain. It is a short drive on single lane switchback road. When on the top, there are various look outs so that one can see Mount Baker to the Sound. The trees have grown tall since this was established, so some of the view is blocked. Just looking out and enjoying it. There are concrete walk ways, concrete steps and some benches to make it very easy to get around. There was one plaque remembering a youth that had fallen to his death. So, one is reminded of the steepness of the mountain. There is also a Honey Bucket on the top. This is quite needed since it is isolated on top. Bicyclists and hikers can also tackle this view also.
The view especially toward the south (Whidbey Island) is stunning. We came up to see the sun set, but that was not quite so easy - lots of trees block the view, and we had to scramble a bit over rocks to get to an advantageous spot. Saw the moon rise (full harvest moon, very pretty), but again had to search for a suitable spot. So ... well worth the drive/hike up, but does not provide the "360° view" we saw advertised.
You can drive completely to the summit. After all the hiking we did we decided to drive. We did notice a trail it you wanted to hike. The roads up are a little steep not horrible though. I guess people also rock climb here
