stafford air & space museum

General Stafford.Museum, is just what the space enthusiast is looking for.It certainly will answer all those questions about, What does a space suit really look like?For my wife and I it was a most enjoyable visit D.J.Julian

We took the chance to see if this was really worth stopping for and now I can't wait to go back. I spent almost 3 hours wandering through some great exhibits and seeing a part of air and space history that is not publicized enough. General Stafford is an amazing man with experiences that are truly worth seeing firsthand. Take exit 84 and travel down a little piece of original Route 66 and educate yourself on a true American and Oklahoma legend.

If you are passing thru this area it is a must stop. We were hesitant but very much surprised at the museum and what it had to offer. A must see.

This is such an amazing treasure for such a small town! This museum looks small however, don't let the outside fool you! The museum itself isn't just about General Stafford, it's about the whole adventure and everything leading up to the first steps on the moon. We spent more time at this museum than any of the other space museums that we have been to. I really have to say that after visiting the Space Museum in Houston and the Space Museum in Huntsville, that this is far better than both of them combined. There are many items that pertain to General Stafford's career, but there are also other items that pertain to the the first flight by the Wright Brothers. There are more planes and you can even look into the cockpit of a fighter jet.Definitely plan on spending some time here!

There is no museum better than the Stafford Museum for Air and Space, short of the Smithsonian. I've been to both, and the Stafford is a close second. General Stafford is a local hero,and his life story is told eloquently in this wonderful facility. Plan for a couple of hours and take the kids. I hope they begin to appreciate that the astronauts were Ameican royalty to those of us who were little kids in the 1950s.

this is a great place to visit. i feel in love with this place, i want to go back and visit it again in the near future. all this history that is in the museum is great.

Located not too far from I-40 and the famous US Route 66, this museum focuses on both aircraft and Stafford's career as an astronaut, especially his famous Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. There are plenty of mementos the Russians gave Stafford before, during and after that flight. In addition, there is a very late model MiG-21, either an MF or PFMA (Fishbed-J or -K). Sadly, in order to give the museum "ambiance," the lights are kept low and good photography is difficult with all but the highest megapixel cameras or a tripod. Still, I mark this museum "excellent" because of the collection. Several of the aircraft are mock-ups or replicas, including both the "Spirit of St. Louis" and the Wright Flyer, both originals of which are preserved at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, of course.When we were there, no other visitors were present and no one was wandering around to answer questions (or protect the collection). I could have made off with the MiG, but I couldn't get it out the door.

So far this is my highlight of route 66. Very easy to spend 1-2 hours here. The museum is well curated and takes you through Stafford's life and career highlights. It expands on space adventure/exploration and then the akes you through the invention of flight. Lots of models, some quite life like. It really brought out my inner geek. It was great to see things on loan from the smithsonian and other high calibre instututions.Definitely stop here and have a fun, educational break.

Exited for gas and saw sign for an astronaut museum 2 miles away. Since I was the passenger and wanting a break from cross country trip, encouraged my husband to go. We are so glad we did. Much more than we thought; not just about Thomas Stafford the astronaut, but also a history of aviation as well as space travel. We stayed a couple of hours in order to see all the exhibits, and bought birthday & Xmas gifts for grandchildren and their parents.

This was a wonderful experience. We had seen the signs on the Turnpike for many years and decided this time to stop. Excellent visit and a very special museum. Very non-descript when approaching. Don't be fooled. There is more that an acre of exhibits. Many on loan from the national museum in Dayton. Superb biographical detail of General Stafford's life, his record as a war pilot, Gemini and Appolo astronaut. Replica of Orville and Wilbur's, and Lindberg's plane. Video on the history of flight. Actual F-16 and Mig fighter jets, Gemini space capsule, Lunar lander and incredible Titan and booster rockets. We were totally unprepared for the professionalism and excellence of this museum. Get off the Freeway and enjoy the history.

Because of time, we considered scratching this museum off our list, but my husband thought we should do it and could still make our destination. Well, are we glad we stopped here! This is a fantastic museum, and it isn't just about space, but aviation. You will see a moon rock, a lunar module and an inactive nuclear warhead. You will learn about General Stafford. It's a wonderful museum. We were the only ones there at first. Then some school groups came in. I was dismayed that they did not have tour guides, and many of them were not appreciating the exhibits. On the way out, we saw they did receive an intro before going in to the museum. Don't miss this!

Our Granddaughter recommended we visit the museum. From the outside it did not like much but once inside you could see it was well worth the stop. We happened in while a tour bus was there and went along with the people as they were given a narration by one of the volunteers on staff. The tour people only had an hour so afterward we went back through at much slower pace. We ended up spending 4 hours there and enjoyed every moment. The volunteer guide informed everyone that he was available most days the museum was open. Its awesome going through on your own but a narrated tour is even better.

Called in here after staying night. What a great place. So interesting especially the rockets. Learnt so much about space etc. If you are in the area this is one place you should visit. Congrats on a great museum.

Very professional. Much to see here. Great place to take teenagers. Well worth the cost. Will go again.

Loved this little museum located at the town airport. Tom Stafford was an astronaut and gave a lot of his stuff to this museum. There are many planes, rocket stuff, motors, neat aviation stuff, and generally this place is not crowded at all. My sons and I stopped by and they like it, too. Well worth the modest entry fee. I would for sure stop here if you have an extra hour or two.
