Ekilby

Albywon

We visited here in late October 2013. It is a maze of small quaint streets lined with beautiful timbered buildings, restaurants, shops etc. It is reached from the Old Town by a number of bridges. You can spend several hours just strolling along and enjoying the atmosphere, stopping at the river's edge to watch the batoramas go by and eating an icecream. You feel you have crossed into Germany or Austria with the timbered buildings and the type of food that is mainly sold in the restaurants. Glad we chose to visit here in lieu of other French cities as a stopover from Monaco to Paris.

La Petite France is a section of Strasbourg that is teeming with fascinating old Alsacienne half-timbered architecture, vibrant shops, delicious eateries, cobbled streets, twisting small streets and arching canal bridges. It is so much fun to wander through La Petite France and soak up the historical ambience but also the feeling of life being lived well by the people who call Strasbourg home. I found the shopkeepers and waiters to be warm and inviting. It is such a wonderful mix of French and German culture. We've been here many times but the Christmas Market was undoubtedly the best time to visit. La Petite France, which is always charming and festive with colorful buildings and beautiful architectural details, is transformed into a vision from Roald Dahl fairytale. There are lights (even chandeliers) festooning every nook and cranny, with toys and elaborate Christmas ornaments decorating building facades. The sights, music and smells of glorious Alsacienne treats fill the air. Unbelievable. Marvelous.

The name may derive from the treatment of a venereal disease, but Petite France is in rude health. Narow passageways, many small shops selling gifts, and restaurants. We found a great ice cream shop (Angelo's) and generally wandered around, over bridges. Watch out for the huge water rats, one of which climbed a few steps towards the ice cream shop!

Every time we visit La Petite France it is always amazing, with the historical architecture and quaint streets and canal system makes for a wonderful experience. To make it even more exciting visit during their Christmas Markets where many buildings are decorated. One street for example had teddy bears attached to the sides and fronts of their stores and shops. Of course a little Gluewein along the way helps to keep you warm. Visit you will never regret.
