We enjoyed having chosen Riquerwihr for our base of exploration of the Alsace smaller villages. Not only because Riquerwihr is near most of other Alsacian villages, but also because the Old Town, where the Christmas Market takes place, is very pleasant.

Well, if you are thinking of visiting Riquewihr, the old walled village is what you are coming to see. This is the Alsatian version of Rothenberg a.d. Tauber in miniature. The place oozes history with many half timber framed buildings and the remaining moat and gates. I enjoyed the back alleys more than the main street, but all is worth a visit. The town definitely has the feel of times long past.I was there during the Christmas market and it was extremely busy, but the crowds were well mannered and festive. The decorated shops were quite pleasant. Prices were high, particularly restaurants and wine bars, but it IS a tourist town.I enjoyed my time here, even with the crowds, and noise. I would go out of my way to visit again, if I found myself in the area. I think a more leisurely exploration without the Christmas market crowds might yield some real treasures. I was told that the place is VERY busy all year, particularly on weekends. One couple in my party report that one restaurant refused service after initially welcoming them after finding out they spoke only English. I can't verify this but it seems many places in France not particularly welcoming to Americans. I spoke broken German while in town and had no such issues. I only mention this as I cannot guarantee it is English speaking tourist friendly.

We visited this wonderful small village in December 2014 and were lucky enough to find that all the Christmas markets were still open and the shops covered in decorations. It turned dark around 4-0pm and the place looked spectacular with all the lights and decorations on show. The hot chestnuts and mulled wime really put the finishing touches to a wonderful visit. Would recommend a visit and any time during the year.

Like I said on the title, this is a little and beautiful small village which deserver a stop of about 3 hours. It is a charming spot and I took a time to have lunch at a restaurant which I do not remember it's name. This is a touristy city and maybe it must be avoided on summer time.

Another small fortified village on the wine route in the Alsace. It consists on one mean street who goes from one gate to another, this for about more or less 400 meters, and near the second gate when you are going downhill the mean street you have the restaurant in which we had diner, called the Tavern de Alsace, small but really to recommend for people who do not want to spend much time in a restaurant when visiting. It is a very well-known old town, and indeed very nice to have a walk in.The problem is to find a parking for the car why the village is car-free.But never the less we loved our visit and would return right away.

Walking around the Old Town of Riqwhir feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The half timber and colorful houses are very quaint. Take note of the Dolder fountain which was used to measure the capacity of wine barrels. There are restaurants ( more than 30) and various shops to cater to tourists. While the town is touristique, one should visit it. The whole place is well preserved from medieval times. We used Riquewihr as a base to explore other towns in Alsace over the weekend. Today, we covered 4 towns- Ribeauville, Hunawhir, Ksysersberg and Eguisheim which are all nearby. Tomorrow we plan to go to Obernai and Mont Saint Odile before returning to Geneva.

This city center was smaller than we had thought but so wonderful. Its streets and shops were such a nice way to enjoy the day. It is so well preserved. All around this little town are vineyards which only add the scenery. We came here in an off season with almost no other tourist which made it even more special as everyone was speaking the native French.

September was a wonderful time to visit Riquewihr with the grape harvest in full swing all around. I don't think we have ever seen so many grapes in our lives! A path leads up to the vineyards near the Best Western Hotel and this gives panoramic views over the village and the Rhine Plain looking towards Germany. In the evening we could see trucks laden with containers of grapes waiting to unload at Hugel, one of the wine makers in the centre of Riquewihr. We also had a bottle of the local Schoenenbourg wine one evening, which proved to be excellent.I can't agree that the village has been ruined by tourists; it's many years since I last visited - in the mid-1980's - but it was my husband's first visit to Alsace and we were both impressed by how well kept the whole area is and by a lack of graffiti and litter, compared to the areas of northern France we'd driven through en route. Riquewihr is full of beautiful colourful timber-framed buildings, many lavishly decorated with window boxes of geraniums, and it's worth taking the time to explore some of the small side streets, and also to walk up the road between the village and the vineyards - this will give an idea of how massive some of the outer buildings are.Plenty of places to eat, drink (there is a brewery in the village which makes the good local Hollbeer for those wanting a change from wine), or simply sit and relax. Early mornings and evenings are quiet. We walked through the village at nine one evening and asked ourselves: Where is everybody? Many other pretty villages to visit nearby and only a short drive either into the foothills of the Vosges or into the larger town of Colmar.

This is one of many old villages on the routes des vins, but one of the best in terms of charm, original character and architecture. We visited mid September, and it was still very busy with tourists, with lovely weather and all businesses open. Riquewihr is centrally located on the wine route, so a great place to stay and explore further. Despite the large number of tourists, we found the local hosts very friendly and helpful, and proud of their lovely village. Just watch out for the cobblestones, which are a bit uneven.

We spent 4 days here and have to say it is lovely the Architecture is stunning you are surrounded by Vinyards and the place is quaint with its cobbled streets and yet has many options for dining and staying. In September is was fairly quiet and it does seem to go to sleep about 10PM . However this Medieval town is just beautiful. It has a number of interest points and if you like wines there are plenty of Vinyards on your doorstep. It does clearly rely on tourisum and the are a few bits of touristic rubish to buy if you want but on a whole it is still pretty authentic with a few lovely shops and awesome places to eat, and not spoilt. Will visit again for sure .

Riquewihr is a medieval town located in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards, between the peaks of the Vosges and the Alsace plain. It is classified among the "plus beaux villages en France" and is also one of the "villes et villages fleuris."We visited mid May 2013, fairly late in the day having spent the morning in Thann and the early afternoon in Eguisheim. Characterised by brightly coloured, half-timbered houses dating from the 15th century, Riquewhir's cobbled main street is a nice place to go for a stroll as the sun is going down. Then enjoy a glass of local wine at one of the winstubs (wine lounges).
