This is the collection belonging to a private foundation that has been placed in seven caves and the adjoining castle. The juxtaposition of the caves and modern sculpture is not to be missed. It is a bit of a challenge to find, but worth the effort.

The caves offer a marvelous setting for sculptures. Unique, refreshing atmosphere and experience. Among the few places one must visit in Sassi.

The Musma has an unique setting, just like every other place in Sassi, but the collection is only for real addicts. Little bit overpriced.

Sculpture from internationally acclaimed artists. The sculptures sits inside the cavities within the caves, almost becoming one with them. Very unique.

Tucked away on a terraced hillside in Matera, the Museum of Modern Art features interesting modern sculptures in radial cave galleries on the ground floor with a more traditional stone second level. We went to see the art during the daytime but were pleasantly surprised to find out that there would be an evening event - we returned after dinner to see two sets of contemporary music provided by a modern jazz group with three female singers.

If in Matera, must visit this museum. The perfect harmony of modern sculptures in an historical and unique setting. Great value for the money.

This museum of modern art is housed in four or five caves which provides an interesting contrast whether you like modern art or not.

Be sure to visit this museum. The setting for contemporary sculpture in a series of caves, nooks and crannies gives the pieces a perfect setting and they can really shine. We had the place completely to ourselves - you don't get that at the Guggenheim!

MUSMA sits in the Sassi area of the town of Matera. My family and I have been to MOMA and L'Orangerie and the Pompidou amongst other fine museums. MOMA stands on it's own. They have a very interesting array of art from different time periods from around the world. The presentation of the pieces are brilliant. If you took the time to make it to Matera, then you should most definitely take the time to go to MUSMA. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!

Get insight into how life was for those living in the caves. Set up pretty much how it was when the last people left in 1958 . Apparently when they were asked to leave some resisted Good value at 2euros

Very good sculpture museum but we would have liked to have been told more about the setting of the sculptures. Some of the caves were interestingly shaped with mysterious holes in the floors and walls and we were desperate to know what they had been used for! The sculptures were very good, and there were a lot of them. We particularly liked the ones on the top floor which were older and more humanoid. It costs 5 euros per person but it was worth it and we practically had the place to ourselves. If you enjoy art, especially contemporary sculpture, definitely go!

The person at the front desk of our desk mentioned this museum and I am real glad I went. They don't allow photography inside or I would post a picture to provide an idea of it. like others said, it is not just the art, but the very unusual way the art is exhibited, in a series of caves that apparently served as a large dwelling at one time. I don't know whether some of the works were commissioned, because several of them fit so perfectly and are so well set off by the surroundings. It takes at least an hour, but ideally two hours to do it justice. Even if you don't like contemporary sculpture, it is well worth seeing. Off season they close early in the afternoon. We didn't know that and we missed it the first day. We went at 10:00 the next morning and pretty much had the rooms to ourselves.

We were not aware of this museum, but passed it accidentally. But it is well worth visiting, even if you are no big fan of modern sculpture. Some of the sculptures were very interesting on their own, but even those that weren't became interesting interacting with the remarkable surroundings. Most of the sculptures are in different caves, and some are in palazzo with splendid views. Also the staff is very nice and welcoming. But for people who have difficulties in walking in stairs most of the museum is not very suitable.

It helps to like modern sculpture if you visit this but the setting is extraordinary - a palazzo of art with galleries that are caves penetrating many metres into the cliffs
