kathara monastery

A lot is made of the winding roads and goats on the island. Don't let this discourage you from making the drive up to the monastery. They were preparing for an upcoming festival and there was a lot of sprucing up going on but we were still allowed to wander. It is a very peaceful spot with great views. If you climb the bell tower the view is even better.

We had a very enjoyable drive up to Kathara although we were up in the clouds for most of the time. The restoration of the Monastery is excellent but more information about the actual history, buildings etc would have been very much welcomed, but you could hear the peace!

I would defininately give 5 stars, if tgere would be a little taverna for a snack or cold drink.the view is wonderful.

The views from the monastery and the road to reach it out across Vathy bay are truly breath-taking. We went in the early evening just as the sun was starting to set and had some stunning views.

The monastery was open to the public and we were free to visit the Church and enjoy the gardens. Outside it is possible to climb partway up the bell tower and enjoy perhaps one of the best views on the island, overlooking the Ionian sea and across to Kephalonia .

Second time in Ithaca and this time I didn't fail to visit this wonderful place. We went up the mountain on a very windy day and it was an amazing experience. Yes, it felt as though we would fly. Don't miss it. Or leave for your second visit to Ithaca.

The view of the whole island is magical, the monastery is peaceful and beautiful! Really worth the visit !!

This monastery is a typical orthodox monastery with old icons and classic architecture. The place on top of a mountain make it outstanding. The view is magnificent and it is only 15 minutes away from the port.

Never thought such a tiny island could reach so high to the sky. Too far from Vathy for an easy climb, too close to miss. We hired a car and drove around the island and this monastery, or should I say the view from it, was a revelation.

The drive up to the monastery is a little hair raising and not for the fainthearted but if you have made it this far driving independently on Greek islands then it will come as no surprise. The road winds up and finishes at a spot with the most incredible views over the whole of the south of this island and beyond to others. The monastery itself was closed but the drive is worth it for the view alone.

Our visit to the monastery, had the feeling of climbing both the topography and the devoutness...!The ascent and turns leading to a hallowed place that reimburses all respects Here the spiritual exaltation and an exploded view of the island of Ithaca, coexist harmoniously in a perfect architectural temples excellent!The abbot of the monastery, ultimate host, enlightened and hospitable elder!Every detail in the interior of the monastery will let speechless..The same and the precincts of the monastery.The guest quarters, will be a reason to come back here.

The island remains unspoilt and despite the dreadful recession in the country, the people and their service and friendliness remain.Prices for accommodation and transport have remained the same for the past 3 years and food was fractionally up. It was a pleasure to see continued restoration on the island and the bay as well as the yacht club was still full over sailing visitors even in shoulder season. Will never tire of visiting Ithaki!

Nice to visit great veiws around this area. Nice paintings on the wall. they were getting ready for a festival when we arived and was giver coffee and biscuts. very good
