The Frick is another great gem of NYC...less crowded than the Met or Guggenheim, and easier to get around in since it was originally the Henry Clay Frick house. However, if the exhibition is a popular one (like an Impressionist everyone recognizes), prepare to stand in a long line that can snake around the block. I've almost loved to take friends here who have been to NYC many times, but never visited the Frick. It's very quiet, peaceful, and beautiful (but can get very busy on the weekends, so go during the week). I am always fascinated by the views of 5th Ave and Central Park, and try to imagine what it would have been like to actually live there. It should be noted that Frick's private collection should not be overshadowed by the house itself, which is it's own museum of sorts. A lot of the furniture and rooms have been preserved just as they were when Frick himself lived there. So if you can suspend your disbelief for just a few hours, you can almost picture yourself on a private tour somewhere in time.
It's like stepping back in time to the Gilded Age of New York! Definitely worth a visit. Beautiful home and art and a chance to see what life was like in the early 20th century for a very privileged New York family
The Frick offers an amazing collection of private art. The museum was a mansion that was planned to become a museum. It is elegant, grand, quiet and comfortable, a perfect museum outing. Videos in the music room explained the tapestries and a brief history of Mr. Frick. Audio guides were available. A visit to the Frick Collection is a perfect museum outing.
When the millionaire, Mr. Frick, built this elegant home on 5th Avenue, overlooking Central Park, he planned that it would become a public museum after his death and that of his wife. The home (grand, but feels like it was a comfortable place to live) contains perhaps the finest collection of art collected by a private person. The audio guide enhances your visit, as do the very knowledgeable guards.
i visit this collection every time I come to New York and there is always something new to see. The atmosphere is so peaceful and you can gaze into Central Park.
This was a beautiful place to visit. I spent half a day here and could easily have spent more time if they had a cafe. The architecture of the house alone was incredible and add to that the beauty and variety of the art collection was just wonderful. I absolutely loved it.
I was impressed with this collection! As it is shown in Frick's house you can not just see the artwork but also admire the furniture and architecture of the place. Pictures are not alowed inside of the house.
