Last time we were in Memphis we did Graceland and Sun Studio, but didn't have time for the Stax Museum. We came back this year just to visit the Stax, and we are glad we did. It was very informative and gave us a whole new outlook about soul music and the history of Motown.

if you like music and history, what better place to visit than here, you can't ask for more. From the costumes to the music they've got it all on one floor so it is easily accessable.

I loved seeing the time period of soul from my youth presented. So many great artists ! The studio setup was very interesting

Whilst Graceland may pull the punters in by the thousand, STAX gives a thoughtful (and no-less excellent) view of the Memphis (and greater US) music scene in the 60's. The musuem opens with a super film on the history of the studio and its performers, and then allows the visitor to go through the history of the label and the momentous period of US history which saw such changes in race relations. Remember, STAX was a colour-blind organisation/group in a segregated world. Sadly reality had a fatal impact - has anything really changed? Go see for yourself- it's excellent.

Starting off with a film capturing the context, the feet started movibg. All through the many sub-stories of the overall story of soul, we hear music-clips, we see interesting memorabilia, and it continues for long. Very stimulating - and very classy t-shirts in the shop as well

There was a lot of information about the history of soul music and Stax Records. A lot of great exhibits, including Isaac Hayes' Cadillac! At the end of the tour make sure to have some fun in the photo booth and have your "retro" picture taken!

Stax Records is to Memphis what Motown is to Detroit. Both started in 1959 and shaped American music for a generation. While the "Motown Sound" became more mainstream and broadly influential, Stax led the way in it own genre of Southern soul music, spawning names like Booker T. and the MGs, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and the Staple Singers, among many others. The Stax Museum is incredibly well done; a lot of thought went into its design and the presentations are terrific. Even for those not well versed in soul music, you'll find this interesting to go through, and it will open your eyes to a musical genre with which you are, perhaps, less familiar. That includes us. We expected to spend an hour here and spent more than two. Quite frankly, we found this more interesting than the Sun Studio tour. We found the film comments by some of the Stax folks to be poignant, especially those comments about how the death of Martin Luther King in Memphis affected the Stax family. Whereas the Stax "family" had been a harmonious interracial group of staff and musicians before King's assassination, the effect of growing racial tensions outside Stax after that tragic event impacted what happened inside Stax. It's a history --and perhaps a lesson -- worth learning.Bottom line, if you want to understand Memphis and the music that came from it, Stax is a must visit. This is a genuine piece of American culture and music history. Enjoy!

If you are a music lover then Stax should be your stop. Learning about Otis Redding, Black Moses & other will have tapping your feet & moving your head

We really enjoyed this part of music history. It was very thorough and informative. There is a LOT to read, so kids might gloss over some of it. But still worth the trip. Nice audio tour.

Spent about 2.5 hours at Stax. Loved the history, exhibits and stories. Wasn't familiar with Stax but certainly familiar with the performers. Just amazing era of music. Really enjoyed the information and music! This was a highlight of our trip to Memphis!!
