moose wilson road

It is very scenic and borders the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Park---certainly worth the trip! However it does take more time than using the highway!

I have been on this road in the past, during the fall. Saw 2 moose & several black bears, quite close. It is a beautiful road even if you don't see wildlife, and that seems to be the case most recently. Was there a week in the fall & 3 times I tried to drive it, but each time the Rangers closed it, due to the bears. So I guess when the bears are gone they open it. Makes it hard to see the bears...Not as great as it used to be, with these new restrictions.

A great little drive anytime of day. Make sure you are in a vehicle where you won't mind a bumpy ride. We drove this drive several times. We saw the best wildlife early in the evening: mule deer, moose, squirrels, elk, birds, fox, bucks, etc...

We came to see Bears! When we tried to take the Moose Wilson Road we were told by the rangers that part of the road was closed because the bears were down eating the berries. I responded with that was the reason we wanted to go was to see the bears. The response I got was "well you won't". I get that the bears need to eat and that the right thing is to close the road to protect them. Just a bit sad we didn't get to ride the entire road! We did ride on the part of the road that was open at dusk and saw a Grand Elk and a couple of deers. I guess that made up for the lack of the bear sightings!

This 8 mile backcountry road between Jackson Hole and Moose, WY is a very good place to see wildlife, especially toward evening or early in the morning. We were following it mid-day and were still able to see two black bears at one of the viewpoints. There are no restaurants or gas stations along this road except at each end. While most of the road is paved, be aware that there is a section that is not paved and is very rough with potholes. We were in an SUV, but there were many cars on the road as well. Just take it slow and look for the high spots. Also watch out for other drivers as this is a two way road and in the rough section everyone tends to go out of their own lane to avoid the holes. There is a Grand Teton National Park entrance at the east end of the Moose-Wilson Road, for which you will need a park pass. The Yellowstone Park pass works for both and lasts 7 days.

They recently fixed some of the potholes on the Moose-Wilson Rd, so my review may no longer be accurate, but when we traveled on it, it was one of the worst roads we've ever encountered. We were in a midsize rental car and it only had front wheel drive and it was a nightmare going through the unpaved portion. Had we been in our SUV, we might have had a better time driving through, but a lot of the trucks tailgate you and speed through and if you go fast in a smaller car, you'll blow out your tires or rim. It's a really convenient cut through and a lot of people see incredible wildlife along it - we were too worried about our car to focus on it. We heard that there are studies underway to determine what to do about the road and how to overcome Rockefeller's request that it not be paved. Hoping his heirs are sensible enough to let the park service make the road more driveable. It was supposed to reopen 9/11 after minor repairs, but there was a grizzly with her cubs by the road, so the park kept it closed for safety, so can't say how it is now that it's had some work.

We drove this road at dusk and saw a monstrous moose, so exciting! We also watched two buck Elks butting heads as this is the start of rutting season. Pretty cool!

We saw our first and only bear while in Wyoming on this road among other critters along with some pretty awesome scenery. Most of the road runs right up against the backbone of the mountains and there are some interesting clouds at sunrise and sunset because of this. Take your time and look carefully and you will be rewarded.

We drove this road early on a foggy Sunday morning and only saw two other vehicles the entire drive. We thought for sure we would see some animals but we didn't .....but we seem to always have bad luck. We only drove it once and I would love to have driven it at least one more time but we had an itinerary to follow and didn't back-track. I can not down-grade it just because we didn't see any animals because the potential sure is there!

We traveled this road a few times. Although we didn't see a bear as hoped, we did see many other animals, including the only moose we saw on our trip - he was walking alongside the car on the road. Also saw an owl and elk.

Road off the beaten path with many sightings of moose, elk, owls, beaver, etc. Stayed in Wilson; drove it every day in & out. One of our favorite rides in the Tetons.

Early in the morning and at dusk there are almost always moose to spot. We have seen moose and babies and lone moose many times on this road.

First drive thru today, saw a Moose. Was told by a Ranger that she had a baby and to stay waaaay back.We did.

Rough in places, this is the place to see moose. Not a slam-dunk but if you are persistant, especially in the morning or evening your chances of seeing of moose are pretty good. We spotted two cows and a calf in two trips.

Time of day might make all the difference. We saw a deer up in the woods, but nothing else. The traffic was bumper to bumper, so stopping would have been difficult anyway. If we had another day we might have tried again, seen all those animals, and given it 5 stars.
