smith mountain lake farm

We kind of stumbled upon this place while we were riding around Smith Mountain Lake, and we were glad we did! For just $5/person, we got on the farm. There are many many alpacas in various places on the farm. I don't know how often the tours run, and I think we missed the first few minutes of it, but it was really cool! They spun fibers and then dyed fibers. I think the part we missed was people getting to feed them. We got to herd one up and then pet him with many photo ops. I learned sooooo much about alpacas! I had NO idea how much there was to learn. I don't wanna spoil anything for those that were as clueless as I was before going there, but you should definitely check this place out! It was a lot of fun!!!

The tour was very nice and informative We were up close and personal with several alpacas and had the opportunity to hand feed them. The picture opportunities were endless. Leaving the farm, we had gained a lot of information about the history of the alpacas and their value to the United States. It was a fun and extremely educational visit. However, at the conclusion of the tour, we went back into the small shop on site and it quickly became a sales-pitch, explaining what merchandise they had and what a bargain it would be to buy directly from them. If you can ignore this last part of the tour, then I would highly recommend the rest of it.
