I was not in favor of Barnes moving to Philadelphia but that being said, it's amazing. The care taken to maintain the integrity of the collection yet design a building that's world class is a success. The original building still has the incredible gardens and worth a visit.
Worth a special trip to PHL just to see this collection. I love the unique way the art is displayed you have to visit.
The Barnes is not a one and done, belt-notch experience. It should be seen again and again. The designers have done a fabulous job recreating the original Barnes arrangements and rooms inside a beautiful new building and landscape setting. Once the visitor begins to understand Dr. Barnes's aesthetic the art becomes more accessible and it keeps coming.
We visited here last month. Worth the trip to Philadelphia to see naught but this museum.Absolutely fabulous experience. The gift shop was exceptionally tastefully stocked. We had something from here shipped to our home in Indiana. Unfortunately an item was broken. When I called the gift shop, the woman graciously gave us full credit.Do not miss going here if you are ever in the Philadelphia area!
It's hard to believe that any individual could collect so much fabulous art in his lifetime, let alone assemble it in such an original setting. The special exhibit of Cezanne's still life work was an extra treat. A museum that definitely deserves a second (or more) visit.
Attended "Free First Sunday," a lovely gift to the public. Wonderful place with a vast and varied collection. Mostly paintings and drawings, some sculpture and fabrics, no photos. Items from 1,500 BC to the mid-1900s. Informative printed guides in each room of displays, and an audio tour if you'd prefer. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Beautiful facility offers a sense of space and light, and time to enjoy. Your pace may differ from mine, but we spent about three hours and that seemed plenty. I love art, but a person can only absorb so much in one visit. Parking on the street was available. Even with extra traffic on this free day, it was a superb visit.
If you like arts of Impressionists, you should not miss to visit The Barnes Foundation museum in Philadelphia. All the arts exhibited are fine and great. However, especially, the collections of Renoir, Cezanne, and Matisse, are remarkable and amazing. You may feel any similar art space cannot be found in any other museums in the world. The all arts are exhibited in the way called “ensembles” as a combination of arts or artifacts covering all over a wall or a room, and you will see the deep insight and the affection of Dr. Burns.I recommend borrowing the audio guide that is already included in the admission fee to obtain easier and deeper understanding of the art and exhibitions.
We haven't been to the new location yet, but we used to go every year when it was on our street. We were very sad to see it go because the collection was truly amazing.
We love the Barnes under ordinary conditions. Attended a party hosted by NBC-10 at night and were able to see the Cezanne exhibit of still life paintings featuring apples with only a handful of people. What a treat!
If you love Renoirs, this is THE PLACE TO VISIT. If you are a tourist in New York City, it is worth a trip to Philadelphia just to see this beautiful museum. We spent a fabulous day looking at these wonderful paintings. I think this is the largest collection of Renoirs in the world. Amazing.
We have long wanted to visit this museum. It was truly worth a visit. Not only the art itself is amazing, the use of contemporary building space is calming and adds a distinctive character. The gift shop has lovely items. Only negative point is that despite the reservation made for the available time slot, wait was quite long.
The drama of the legal fights and the controversy about moving to the Ben Franklin Parkway were well worth the result of public access to the Barnes Collection and the story of Alfred Barnes in a convenient location and a wonderful building. The Docent tour was very informative. We would like to see more pieces of the Collection discussed in the audio tour. All in all a great day, and clearly in line for several more great days to see and enjoy more of what the Barns has to offer.
The famous collection is in its new setting in Philadelphia now but the arboretum in Lower Merion is still alive and well. Horticulture classes are still held here and the spirit of Mrs Barnes still seems to be hovering around. The 1922 Mansion used to house the art collection . I have seen it in this original setting a few years ago but now it is more accessible (except for ticket limits and restrictions) in Philadelphia.
Excellent collection of art, love the mix of different styles. Efficiently run, well organized museum.
one of the most impressive collection of impressionism you can see! the display is as impressive as the things displayed! if you are in Philly, GO! it is an experience like no other. GO!
