This is a really great park. Over 2000 acres of woods and trails, with ski trails designated and rarely any people. Terrific.

excellent park, beautiful facility, brand new, newest park in Wisconsin,Governor Thompson State Park was established in 2000, the Location Wisconsin State Park System's centennial year. With more than 2,800 acres of woods, a family campground, picnic area on Woods Lake, skiing and hiking trails, and six miles of shoreline on the Caldron Falls Flowage, visitors will find an atmosphere that is perfect for solitude, reflection, and recreation

Governor Thompson State Park is one of the newer state parks in Wisconsin. Opened in 2000, the park offers new roads and modern facilities and throughout it's 2,800 acres.Near the entrance of the park is Woods Lake, a picnic area with a swimming beach. The beach is set back beyond the picnic area, which includes a small building you can use for larger gatherings. The campground areas are all fairly modern and were well thought out in their layout. Each site attempts to offer privacy from the neighboring site. My site offered built up dirt on one side, and a good amount of woods with the other. The sites all offer picnic tables, fire rings, and were fairly flat. Unless you're camping in your backyard, I don't think you'll find an easier site. Restroom facilities were adequate. There were a couple pit style toilets with running water in my campground, with larger facilities in the other campground. This park was made for fisherman. There is a boat launch within the park, and Two Bridges State park (also with a boat launch) is nearby. There were several hiking trails in the area. These were all brief day hikes. For more serious hiking, the Nicolet National Forest is 20 miles to the West.State parks seem to take on different purposes. Some attract people from wide distances with significant landmarks and activities, or nearby attractions. Others are designed as a local park. Governor Thompson State Park certainly has quality facilities and is well run, but it seems more closely aligned with the latter. Other than fishing, the surrounding area doesn't have many attractions.I had no issues with the park itself. I hoped for some better hiking trails, but overall it's a very good park. If you're an avid fisherman or just looking for a weekend away, this is a good park. If you're looking to hike or check out attractions in this region, I suggest Nicolet National Forest to the West.
