Rancho Seco was once the main power plant for the Sacramento, CA metro area. In 1989, voters passed a measure to shut Rancho Seco down. In 1997, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) began to decommission the plan and all work was compiled in 2009. It now just a shell of a power plant. Growing up next to Sacramento during the 80s, I had always heard of Rancho Seco, but never saw it up close. I finally decided to make a day trip out and go visit Rancho Seco, making it a family picnic outing, as there is a recreational area right next to the power plant. It is really incredible to see the iconic cooling towers up close. You can get pretty close to the power plant (100 yards or so) but the main grounds and facilities are gated off and posted. The recreational area was nice for a picnic (there is a $10 fee to park and enter the park). We went on a Saturday in February, a holiday weekend, and it was not crowded in the picnic area but the trailer spots seemed to be all full. We had no problem finding a table. There were a lot of people fishing from shore and some in small boats. It was nice afternoon and a highlight for me and my kids to see the power plant up close.

We took our RY there. I don't feel this attraction put much thought into the RV spots. This facility allows, tent camping , rv spaces and day use for picnicing, swimming boating, bbq's etc. Great overall for the family. The RV spots sat on the main road and that main road produces a great amount of traffic. It was noisy from the tent sites, and I feel they could have offered rv' ers a better location.
