Love this castle but my husband did propose here so I am slightly bias! Worth a walk around if you are in the area and enjoy historic sites.

Palmela is a town south of Lisbon easily reached for a day outing. Nearby is also a natural park (Arrabida) good for a hike. The castle is interesting and well preserved. There is also a Pousada attached to the castle that I am sure will make it for a very pleasant night right on the top of the mountain. We visited the castle in January and it was very quiet with only a few other visitors. You can park at the top near the castle (limited parking) but it is worthwhile to park the car in the lowertown and walk around. It is a pretty town. You can walk on your own around the buildings. You can climb the tower for a higher view, walk around ramparts, visit a church and a few rooms with archaeological displays. It is not certainly a palace with displays of kings and queens belongings in pretty rooms. Finish the visit with a drink in the PousadaYou can also go for a 13km hike from the Village. It is called Moinhos Track (Windmills Track)

You will find the Castle at the very top of Palmela town, by following the lovely narrow streets. The views alone are well worth the visit. The castle and its grounds are clearly explained and the Church also has a museum. A great place to visit for all the family.

The castle is amazing ranging from a 12 cent church destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 to the 14th Cent. keep. It is a great walk with easy access. Go early and you will be the only one there

The castle and associated archaeological excavations are well and clearly explained, so the site is both interesting and educational.

Panoramic views in all direction. Entry to castle is free but small charge for the church which has a museum. The pousada is an excellent place to see for a night.

We drove up through Palmela town (mostly in first gear!) before going out for dinner. We were expecting it to be closed but just wanted a look. At 6.30pm the castle was open but all of the shops and information points were closed. There was a self-service snack room though. We wandered through and up the castle and looked at the views from every angle. Really stunning. My husband, our daughters and I were quite enchanted with the castle and the views were really breathtaking. Worth the drive!

The castello has a great view but not very much more to see beside the old pousada inside the walls.

Great drive up from the small town of Palmela We actually stayed at the Pousada (monastery) that is located next to the castle. It is obvious that there is some form of restoration being done that will eventually include some small shop. There is also an old church on the grounds. Well maintained and offers panoramic views of Setabul and the surrounding mountainside. Well worth a visit.

Brilliant castle with a 5 star pousada hotel on the roof enjoy the spectacular views and a coffee in the hotel really good for a game of hide and seek .

We were taken here by tours by locals. This was a very interesting site because it had ruins from the earthquake that occurred in the 1755 pretty much as they were when it happened, as well as the monastery that has been revamped into a beautiful hotel with a restaurant. There is a old church on the grounds and the views are great. We spent about 2 hours there and took lots of pictures and learned a lot about the area from Susanna for tours by Locals. She was a great guide and we spent the whole day with her. Well worth the visit.

Beautiful Moorish castle on a hill. If you love castles and have imagination, you'll love this. Fantastic view of the town below, Setubal, and the coast. Great place for some photos.

One more castle in Lisbon region, a car is required to visit it due to the distance from any other attractions. In fact is all about the castle and the view itself, there´s nothing else to do.If your in the area use the chance to visit, if not maybe doesn´t worth driving miles to it.

You can wander around the ruins and walls, climb up the towers, look down over the countryside, watch the martins soar over the trees below. There is a very helpful information office, as well as some archaeological excavations.
