This old town was an unexpected pleasure. From the river, the narrow streets and alleys, with their 12th century houses, wound up the steep hill crowned by the imposing cathedral with the top lost in the morning fog.

For 1.50 euros you can buy a great self guided walking guide for Auxerre at the Tourist Office. It is very good value. You can then spend 2 or more hours exploring the old town at your leisure. There are over 60 annotated sites to visit. Auxerre is a particularly pretty town overlooking the Yonne river with a cathedral & a couple of other interesting churches, not to mention the oldest vineyard in France and buildings that used to be brothels. The walk is a fascinating experience.

Wandering slowly around the old town is like a journey of discovery, the architechture delights at every turn with broad and narrow streets, alleyways and courtyards there's always something of interest to catch your eye. The city of Auxerre has done a masterful job in landscaping the place, flower beds, and pots abound with unusual and beautiful arrangements. The riverside walk completed two years ago is stunning with the old city and cathedral backdrop. On a matter of hygene here's a city at the vanguard of cleaning up the historical French reluctance to clean up after their dogs and while many towns are spolit by dogs fouling the pavements and grassed areas, Auxerre is educating it's citizens to clean up.......or be fined -if ponly more towns followed their lead! Just gorgeos, walk around at leaisure and soak up the atmosphere, stop for a coffee, a beer or glass of Chablis.......stunning town, spend time here!

This place was right out of a story book! It was so beautiful! There were tons of cute little shops to stop in and the locals were very friendly!

Beautiful town, capital of Yonne department, crossed by the Yonne river. Many parking areas are scattered around the town; whether you’d intend to save money, several free-of-charge parkings are located just outside the historical city centre, but meantime few minutes walking time from it.Before to start your visit, I do recommend to visit the tourism office, where you’ll find a nice brochure free-of-charge, that will support you in the tour around the city (further guides and maps, even more complete, are on sale). The city centre is very enjoyable, with many half-timbering medieval houses; you’ll go through small squares and narrow streets, exposing beautiful historic palaces, bars, shops, charming restaurants, gourmand pastry-shops.Just at side of the tourism office, you’ll find the double-face Clock Tower, one of the top Auxerre attractions; in the close vicinity, a funny statue of the poetess Marie Noël, made by François Brochet, both artists born in Auxerre.Take time to visit the St. Étienne Cathedral, its wonderful façade and portal, its huge and severe interior inviting to meditation, with remarkable artistic coloured windows; as a further religious building, try to see even the Saint-Germain Abbey. Many further churches are located around the town.A beautiful view of the city, of its old quarters, and over all of the Cathedral, can be enjoyed from the bridge on the Yonne river; take the chance to make a walk on river bank and inside the quarter looking at it.

Tourist information sells an English map and guide for a walking tour of Auxerre. Great for adults, may be too long for children. We spent a whole day following the trail lingering at beautiful views and marveling at gorgeous preserved old architecture. Do it!
