I love the brews that come from Highlander, Twisted Spruce probably being my favourite. I've had the immense pleasure of visiting the Brewery for a couple of events over the years, and I have to say this place is a must-see for any visitor to South River.Whether it's a tour of the facility from Bryan, a performance from a local band, or a community event, Highlander Brew Co is the place to be.
Highlander Brew Company is producing some outstanding beverages and is expanding availability to local sources. One such location is Michaels On Main in Sundridge where the favourite drafts are from the Highlander Brew Co. Whether at Wings Night, at Show Evenings or noon hours and evening dinners, the beers are often the most popular.
Well worth stopping in for a cold one. I preferred the Lion Grass Beer but the others were good as well. A live performance by local singer and song writer Sean Cotton was a real highlight as well.
I dropped into Highlander Brew Co. for a cool one and was blown away with the hospitably,Brian ever had live music that night. Took a cool tour of his brewery and made some new friends, you have to try this beer, he has something for all taste buds, way to go Brian.
We visited this brewery on a Friday of a long weekend - prime busy time. The gentleman we spoke with (production manager) was absolutely a joy to chat with. He treated us like he had all day for our questions, gave us samples of their wonderful (seriously- they are all great) beers and shared wonderful stories about the brewery. We can`t wait to stop by again and absolutely encourage everyone to visit. Just the best.
While it's not the easiest place to find in South River (the view of the water and shoreline are a bit of a distraction) the craft brewery is worth the effort. Nicholas is as entertaining as he is knowledgeable about the brew, the process, and the industry. We came upon them at one of those awkward moments for a successful brewery (not a pint in the house to sell, having just shipped it all to customers). Yet we were still on time for the tasting! Nicholas tapped us some generous samples of the three brews (award winners all); Scottish ale, Blacksmith Smoked Porter (just to my liking - a dark and tasty bit with a smoky espresso that will stand up to meats), and Lion Grass (Robin's personal favourite - a delightful blend of lemon grass and dandelion, with a citrus finish like an IPA).We join our voices to the chorus to bring back the Twisted Spruce. Thanks Nicholas for the tour. You can check out the tour on YouTube, but I recommend the visit.
My husband has particularly enjoyed the Highander Brewing company. We live in the small village of South River and are always proud to help promote and introduce this ale to new people. We have taken the tour from Brian or Pat and are fortunate to get some advance tastes sometimes of a new brew. Made with pride in South River but more and more people are discovering yet another special thing our village has to offer! Try a bottle!
Wasn't sure about it from the outside but the open sign on the door let us know we were at the right spot. Popped our heads in and was welcomed by an employee named Pat who gave us a wonderful and informative tour of the workings of the brewery while we enjoyed a couple of tastings of their offerings. We were glad we made the detour off the highway and made sure not to leave South river without some souvenir bottles of beer to take home
Cooped up in a cottage on a rainy day we made a great escape to visit this small brewery. Driving up I was a little taken aback by the humble building that housed Highlander, but tamped down my skepticism and parked in their lot. We were immediately greeted by the host, owner and Brew Master Brian Wilson --and given a intimate look at how they brew their particular brand of ale. I had several teens with me and they were skeptical about coming with, but even they enjoyed our time spent there--they may have even learned something:) The time spent was fun and informative and our host was outstanding! I recommend you call ahead--on the days they are bottling they need all hands on deck and can't have tours walking through. Their ale is available at the local LCBO and though I am by no means a connoisseur of ale--even I enjoyed the sample provided! Thank you Brian!
We visited Highlander Brew Co in mid June. Although it is readily apparent that it is a small craft brewery you will not find an owner that takes more pride or interest in his product and in his industry. Brian gave us the tour, patiently answered our questions, and then let us tap off our own free samples. The Scottish Ale produced on site is second to none. A lovely copper coloured ale with a good dose of taffy malt sweetness and hopped in appropriate balance. Because the brewery is limited in staff and growing in popularity you might want to call ahead to make sure that Brian and staff are there and available for the tour. What a lovely treat to find a brewery to visit in such a small town. I would recommend that anyone in the area interested in craft beer, and wanting to support truly local business, drop by for a visit. Most importantly bring some home with you on the way out too! Good luck in the future Brian!
